ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Police arrested a man Tuesday morning in connection with a string of overnight burglaries across the city. Surveillance video shows the man walking through the Shaw neighborhood around 1:30 a.m. with a crowbar, scaling homes. He skipped one house before making it into a home on Flora in south St. Louis, breaking a window to enter around 4:45 a.m. He's definitely doing it to steal electronics, Gary Hosna, the Shaw Neighborhood Operational Model Board Member, said. Surveillance video shows the man rummaging through belongings, moving through the house and heading up the stairs while wearing gloves. It is really scary when someone does that; he's wearing gloves, in the instances too, so that's his primary. Something bad could occur; you wake up, and someone's in your house, bad things can occur, Hosna said. The homeowners said they heard someone outside their bedroom and thought it was one of their children. One of their dogs started barking, which they believe scared the man away. We figured that because there was so much video evidence out there, some of it was originally posted on social media, and then we sent them several other ones, and they were very good pictures, that they were going to arrest this guy pretty quickly, Hosna said. Hosna said he put out a call, and neighbors followed up with more video, including footage from other neighborhoods. Within half an hour, 45 minutes, we had 2 or 3 extra videos we shared with the police department, and then I called other neighborhoods where I knew he had been the day before and got their videos, packaged it all up, and actually that really helped on this case, Hosna said. Police say charges are still pending as paperwork is being completed. The homeowners say they truly appreciate the response of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, especially Officer Hunt, who lives in Shaw and came to take the report. They have appreciated how the community has responded, saying, You truly don't realize how many people are in your support network until something happens.
