Milwaukee annual 5K honors domestic violence victims, mother killed in Glendale Kamonti McFarlane's family joined the Let Them Live 5K in Glendale to raise awareness about domestic violence one year after her death. Hundreds of people gathered Saturday for the #LETTHEMLIVE 5K, raising awareness about domestic violence. The race brings together domestic abuse survivors, community members and supporters. This year's race honored Kamonti McFarlane, a mother shot and killed last October. It's absolutely bittersweet, said Corliss Shaw, McFarlane's aunt. We are glad that we can bring family together here so that we can support her, her family, her children, at the same time, of course, we miss and love her. McFarlane, a 45-year-old mother of three, was shot outside her Glendale home in September 2025. She later died from her injuries. In the days following her death, family told 12 News the shooting was a result of domestic violence. A year later, the family continues to call attention to domestic violence. This is something that affects so many different people of all ages, all races, Shaw said. So it's something that we absolutely need to come together and get some kind of hold on what's going on. ExPOSED Inc. co-founders Natalie Hayden and LaVerne Badger began their work by sharing their own experiences with domestic abuse through a podcast. Their work eventually expanded beyond the podcast and into community outreach and education. The organization created a curriculum called No More Mean Girls, which teaches young people how to identify healthy and unhealthy relationships. Badger said the organization has brought the curriculum to students ranging from middle school through college. The #LetThemLive 5K is now in its seventh consecutive year at Veterans Park. Organizers said the event brings survivors, families and supporters together while connecting people with resources. We hope to be saving lives, Badger said. It's one of those things that's a silent killer. People don't like talking about it, but it affects all of our communities. Badger said or #wisn #crimewatchmilwaukee
