Multiple arrests as crews clear Madison protest encampment Ten people were arrested as crews cleared the encampment at Williamson and South Baldwin streets in Madison.

City crews began clearing a protest encampment tied to a police shooting Tuesday morning at the intersection of Williamson and South Baldwin streets in Madison.

Ten people were arrested during the operation, according to the ABC affiliate in Madison.


Crews arrived around 5 a.m. and ordered people at the encampment to remove their belongings and leave the area.

Video from the scene showed city trucks clearing the encampment and officers in riot gear surrounding protesters who were blocking the intersection.

The encampment formed after a Madison police officer shot and killed Corey Ruiz on July 22. Madison police said officers initially responded to reports of someone checking vehicle doors and stealing bicycles. Police said Ruiz had a knife and injured an officer as officers tried to arrest him.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway called for the occupation to end Monday, citing safety concerns and the impact on nearby residents and businesses.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is leading an independent investigation into the shooting.
