A man has been arrested in connection with a fake U.S. Marshal fraud scheme that cost an elderly woman over $300,000, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said.

According to BSO, their Tamarac District received a report last month about a 75-year-old woman who was scammed by a man posing as a U.S. Marshal.

The victim had initially received a call from someone claiming to represent Walmart's fraud department who told her about a $1,400 Apple laptop purchase made in her name.

The woman was eventually transferred to a man who identified himself as  U.S. Marshal Adam Peterson  who told her that her identity has been used in connection with an abandoned vehicle in Texas that contained drugs, cash and evidence of human trafficking.

She was told there was a federal arrest warrant issued for her and she could hire an attorney for $100,000 or cooperate with a federal investigation.

The fraudster convinced the woman to liquidate her assets and convert them into gold, which she did, before she met a courier at a gas station and handed over the gold, authorities said.

She lost over $300,000 in family savings accumulated over 33 years, officials said.

Detectives discovered two vehicles - a red Honda Accord and a grey Jeep SUV - were used in the scheme, and were able to identify 21-year-old Mohit Mohit as the suspect who made the exchanges, officials said.

Mohit was arrested on BSO's warrant in Bradford County, Florida, and faces multiple charges including scheme to defraud, grand theft on a person 65 or older and unlawful use of a two-way communications device.

Authorities are search for other potential victims of similar scams and are asking anyone with information to call BSO at 954-720-2225.
