Soares' mother told investigators she met with Soares a few days after the murder, and that Soares told her he  had to urgently leave the area because he was in trouble and that his life was in danger,  the warrant said.

They discussed leaving the country and his mother prepared a trip with a travel agency and paid for him to go to Brazil, the warrant said.

Another person said he hadn't seen Soares since the killing and that last he heard, Soares was living in Africa, the warrant said.

Miami Police officials said they worked with federal agencies to locate Soares in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was arrested before he was extradited back to South Florida.

Soares appeared in court Thursday where he was appointed a public defender and ordered held without bond.
