(WMC) - The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is investigating after an inmate allegedly stabbed his cellmate to death Tuesday morning at 201 Poplar. SCSO Public Information Officer Jerrita Patterson says the incident happened around 9 a.m. The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Erick Jones. Patterson says a first-degree murder charge has been filed against the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Johnathan Griffin. Johnathan Griffin, 19, and Erick Jones, 23 (Shelby County Sheriff's Office) The investigation began after correctional officers responded to a disturbance in one of the jail pods at 201 Poplar at 8:55 a.m. The COs arrived to find Jones injured. Jail staff provided emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived. Jones was then rushed to Regional One Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 9:26 a.m. Johnathan Griffin (previous booking photo) (Shelby County Sheriff's Office) Preliminary information indicates that Griffin stabbed Jones to death. Patterson says the two were cellmates. SCSO reports that Griffin is now being housed in a separate unit at the jail. Court records show that Griffin was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning for a report date. He is accused of killing two people in Hickory Hill back in 2024.
