MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A convicted felon who is serving his sentence for a domestic assault from February has been charged in connection with a Memphis murder that occurred shortly after that incident.

Stevie Boyd, 29, was booked at the Shelby County Jail on June 9 and charged with domestic violence. Boyd was found guilty in that case and sentenced to 11 months' imprisonment.

On July 20, while still in custody, the Memphis Police Department says an indictment was handed down, charging him with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, employing a firearm with intent to commit a dangerous felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Boyd's new charges are tied to a deadly shooting that took place in Memphis' Whitehaven area around midnight on Saturday, February 21.

Court records show that a separate domestic altercation he's convicted of happened at his mother's house on Valentine's Day, exactly one week before the murder.

The Memphis Police Department alleges that Boyd shot a man in the area of Millbranch Road near Interstate 55 the following Saturday. The victim died from his injuries at the hospital.

Court records show that Boyd was arrested days later on February 28 after officers responding to a loitering call found him unlawfully carrying a handgun. Boyd is a convicted burglar with an extensive arrest history. He was released on bail days later and remained free until his DV arrest on June 9.

He wasn't formally identified as a suspect in the Whitehaven homicide until July 17.

Boyd is still behind bars without bond. His arraignment for this case is set for Tuesday morning.
