SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - A person Michigan State Police described as a good Samaritan was killed Saturday night after getting out of their vehicle to help people involved in a crash on the Lodge Freeway. Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash near Nine Mile Road before midnight. One of the vehicles was disabled and blocking the freeway's two left lanes. MSP said a driver stopped and got out to help those in the disabled vehicle. While the pedestrian was assisting, another vehicle swerved to avoid the disabled car and hit the pedestrian. That person died at the scene. The driver of the car that hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Kennedey Moncrief said he and his girlfriend were leaving a fashion show when they saw the initial crash. He said he pulled over to the side, called 911, and that's when another car pulled up behind him. He said the driver of that car got out of his vehicle to help the disabled car. Minutes later, he saw the man get hit. It was devastating, Moncrief said. I really can't put into words yet. I'm still kind of processing it. Moncrief called the man a hero because he died trying to help others. I call him a hero, Moncrief said. I call him a hero. I call him very selfless. It's one of those chaotic events that you just don't really have words for right away. All you can think about is their family and loved ones. Lt. Ty Howard, a public information officer with Michigan State Police, described the man as a Good Samaritan but said the situation was very unfortunate. Howard said police frequently see people stop to help after crashes or when they encounter a disabled vehicle, but he urged drivers not to do that. One thing I'm going to recommend is whatever you do, do not get out of your car, Howard said. Try not to assist and call for assistance because with the police we are trained for this. We have the tools necessary to shut down a freeway or a railway to ensure that we can do it safely and properly. If a driver encounters a disabled vehicle, Howard recommends moving over a lane when possible or slowing down 1 #clickondetroit #CrimeInTheD ®
