Voter fraud is a concern for some people, but Michigan election officials say it is extremely rare. You're more likely to get eaten by a crocodile than you are to have experienced voter fraud in this state, said Aghogho Edevbie, Michigan's deputy secretary of state. Edevbie said Michigan conducts extensive reviews to identify illegal voting. We did a comprehensive audit after the 2024 elections, and we were able to identify some people who did the wrong thing and voted illegally. We referred those cases to the attorney general's office and some of those people are being prosecuted. If you're gonna do it, we're gonna find a way to catch you, he said. Election officials say there are many security checks in place to prevent voter fraud. Only U.S. citizens are eligible to register to vote or cast a ballot in state or federal elections. Five noncitizens were charged in August 2026 with allegedly voting in Michigan's 2024 general election. One U.S. citizen was charged with allegedly registering her noncitizen spouse to vote. The Michigan attorney general's office is reviewing 22 additional cases involving suspected noncitizen voting or related conduct from 2009 through 2025.
