BERKLEY, Mich. - A driver has been charged in a fiery car crash in Berkley that left a passenger dead. The crash happened in the area of Edgewood Avenue and Henley Street just after 10 p.m. on Sept. 7. The driver was charged with OWI causing death. (Berkley Department of Public Safety) Police said a 2021 Chevy Blazer struck a tree and caught fire. When officers arrived at the scene, they could see flames inside the passenger compartment. Two people were in the car: the driver and a front-seat passenger. Both were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The passenger, later identified as Eugene Garnett, 51, from Warren, died from his injuries. Police said alcohol and controlled substances were involved in the circumstances surrounding the driver's condition, with his alcohol level double the legal limit. Speed was also a factor in the crash, as investigators determined the car was going over 100 mph. The driver, Marquis D. Jackson, from Detroit, was charged with operating under the influence causing death. Jackson was arraigned in court on Oct. 2 and was given a $200,000 personal bond. He is also required to wear an alcohol tether and is not allowed to drive a car as a condition of bond.
