DETROIT - Community advocates canvassed Detroit's west-side neighborhood Friday, going door-to-door to check on residents, connect them with resources, and hear their concerns following a deadly weekend shooting. Three people were killed, and four others were injured at what officials described as an unauthorized after-hours gathering at a home on Prest Street. As grieving neighbors continued to leave memorials outside the home, a large group of community advocates gathered nearby to speak with residents and offer support. I love what I'm seeing because this is what we've been praying for - that this block can come back to what it once was, longtime resident Willie Mae Gibson said. Gibson, who is in her 90s, was the original block captain on Prest Street. She and her daughter, Beverly Frazier Cunningham, took time to speak with the group. This street needs resources. People over here are hurting. They are devastated, said Teferi Brent. Director of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety. I spoke to a young man who said he's scared to come outside. A lot of elders on this particular street are traumatized. The effort brought together city and county officials, community violence intervention groups such as Ceasefire Detroit and Detroit 300, police and public service workers from several departments. We don't have departmental people here. We have a community of people here who want to help, said Lynn McNeil, Community Affairs Systems Manager for Detroit Council President James Tate, Jr. They want to take the time and opportunity to come out here and connect with the residents. Residents said their concerns go beyond crime. They also raised issues involving junk cars, abandoned homes, and overgrown lots. We want to prevent things like this from happening, said Tamara Smith with Ceasefire Detroit. So, we want to make sure that we continue to stay out here, continue to stay engaged with the community and let them know that we are here. At the end of the canvass, advocates and residents gathered in a circle to pray for the neighborhood. Some residents #clickondetroit #CrimeInTheD ®
