OAK PARK - A 19-year-old driver is in custody after police say he ignored a traffic signal in an Oak Park intersection, resulting in a fatal traffic crash Thursday night. According to police, the crash occurred around 11 p.m. after the 19-year-old, who was driving a Dodge Charger, collided with an Uber driver in a Buick Envision at the intersection of eastbound Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway. Investigators say surveillance video from the scene showed that the Envision had the right of way. The driver of the Envision had to be extricated from the vehicle, while the Uber driver's passenger - identified as a 23-year-old man - was ejected during the crash. When first responders arrived, the passenger was lying on the roadway, conscious and breathing. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died, police said, and the 23-year-old remains in critical condition. The identity of the Uber driver has not been made public. Investigators say the preliminary investigation points to intoxication being a factor for the driver of the Charger, who sustained minor injuries during the collision. An 18-year-old female passenger in the Charger was not injured, according to police. The 19-year-old was taken into custody with charges currently pending. Police say the Oakland County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation by conducting accident reconstruction and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Berkley police and members of the Detroit Fire Department also assisted. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to reach out to Oak Park Department of Public Safety at 248-691-7520. Patrol car hit during crash investigation Around 1 a.m. later that evening, while assisting Oak Park police with directing traffic away from the fatal crash investigation, Berkley police say a second driver believed to be under the influence struck an unoccupied patrol car. The driver reportedly had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
