A 3-year-old boy died after he was accidentally shot inside an apartment in Pontiac. PONTIAC, Mich. - A 3-year-old boy died after he was accidentally shot inside an apartment in Pontiac. The shooting occurred on Tuesday (Sept. 15) in the 100 block of Maynard Court. Police said the boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard discussed the shooting during a press conference Tuesday night. Bouchard said the boy was inside the home with his mother, grandmother and three other children, ages 8 months, seven and eight, when the shooting occurred. Police said an unsecured handgun was inside the home. It remains unclear how the boy was killed and/or how the gun was obtained. The boy's father was not at the home when the shooting occurred, but Bouchard said the handgun belonged to him. Bouchard said the other children who were inside the apartment were taken into the care of detectives as investigators continued working to determine exactly what happened. Bouchard said those responsible could face consequences if investigators determine the firearm was not properly secured. No arrests or charges had been announced as of Tuesday night. Officials have not released the boy's name or additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
