Wyandotte police say a woman killed by her son called 911 several hours before the shooting, but officers did not have legal grounds to enter the home. The son took his own life as an officer approached to arrest him, police said. Police received a 911 call at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, from a 67-year-old woman regarding a domestic dispute with her son. She called from a home in the 800 block of 6th Street, off Goddard Road. When officers arrived, the house was quiet and no one answered the door. They attempted to look through the windows but the shades were drawn, police said in a statement. The officers did not have legal grounds to force entry into the home, the statement said. Our dispatch center attempted to contact the caller by phone multiple times to no avail. At 3:15 a.m. the following morning, police received additional information in another 911 call that led officers back to the home. This time, they entered the home and found the mother dead from multiple gunshots. Police identified the woman's 41-year-old son as the prime suspect. The mother's vehicle was missing from the home. Officers checked Flock license plate readers and found the vehicle traveling west on Goddard Road, away from the home, only minutes after the 911 call. The vehicle was then captured on Flock in the Toledo area. Just before 10 a.m., the vehicle began passing Flock cameras traveling north, presumably to return to Michigan, the release said. As we prepared to intercept the suspect at the state border, an officer from Toledo observed the suspect. The vehicle pulled into a parking lot, forcing the officer to attempt an arrest without any assistance. As the officer attempted an arrest, the suspect produced a handgun and shot himself, the release said. He was dead at the scene, police said. Police said the gun that the son used was the same caliber as the shell casings found at the Wyandotte home. Police Chief Archie Hamilton said both the mother and son apparently lived at the home on 6th Street. Out of respect for the family, police are not releasing the names of the mother and so #thenewsherald #CrimeInTheD ®
