WESTLAND, Mich. - A 20-year-old Westland man is expected to be arraigned today for first-degree murder in connection to the fatal shooting of his girlfriend over the weekend in the apartment they shared together. Westland police were dispatched to the home in the 36000 block of Hunter Avenue around 6 p.m. on Sunday after receiving calls about multiple shots being fired. Upon arrival, police located the victim - identified as 18-year-old Monica Rokita, of Westland - in the kitchen/living room area with several gunshot wounds to the face, arm, chest and stomach. She was pronounced dead by medics at the scene, police said. A GoFundMe was created on Monday on behalf of Rokita's family to help support funeral and memorial expenses, as well as anything else her family may need while they grieve and try to navigate life after this devastating loss. As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, more than $11,700 had been raised toward the fundraiser's $13,000 goal. Prosecutors in the case allege that the suspect, who will be identified following his arraignment, shot Rokita multiple times with a rifle during a domestic dispute, and fled the scene shortly after. A preliminary investigation by Westland police led to the man's arrest, the department said. His arraignment has been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in the 18th District Court in Westland. In addition to the first-degree murder charge - which carries a maximum sentence of life without parole - he faces one count of felony firearm. #clickondetroit #CrimeInTheD ®
