A video making the rounds on social media showing a violent attack on a hot dog vendor outside a mall in downtown Los Angeles last week is now part of a police investigation.

In the video from June 15, a woman is seen squirting what appears to be sauce onto hot dogs cooking on the vendor's grill. The vendor then throws an orange-colored powder toward the woman.

Seconds later, the woman grabs the vendor by the hair and takes her to the ground as bystanders rush in, trying to break up the fight. As the vendor tries to get back up, the woman pulls her to the ground again and continues hitting her, the video shows.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it is investigating this case and looking for help identifying the woman seen attacking the vendor in the video.

 It was mayhem. I couldn't believe it,  said Brian Caphart, who sells clothing next to the vendor.  It was shocking. It was chaos. 

Caphart says he rushed over as the attack unfolded and tried to keep the woman away from the vendor, but that he couldn't stop the attack.

Guadalupe Lara, who also sells nearby, says she's experienced similar incidents, such as people knocking over her table and stealing some of her belongings. She wasn't working the day of the attack, but said the vendor seemed a little down after speaking with her on Monday night.

Lara says the vendor returned to work the day after the attack but hasn't been back for the past few days.

The vendor's son told NBC Los Angeles by phone on Monday that he was taking her to the hospital. Through social media, he says his mom has been a street vendor for the majority of her life.

For now, the vendors who work alongside her are hoping she makes a full recovery and returns soon.
