A man was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies after he allegedly stabbed a deputy in Lancaster on Saturday, authorities said.

The incident happened near Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway at around 2 p.m., according to the sheriff's department.

Officials say deputies were responding to a report about a person with a knife when the deputy was stabbed by the suspect, prompting the LASD to shoot. It's unclear if more than one deputy shot at the suspect.

The man, struck by gunfire, was taken to the hospital, where he died, the LASD said. The deputy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the department. Neither of them has been identified by officials.

As part of a standard protocol for deputy shootings, multiple investigations are underway, including by the LASD's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Office of the Inspector General will be notified, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will determine if criminal charges will be filed.
