ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A man who was found guilty of killing a Hermann officer and seriously injuring another has been sentenced to death, court records show.

Kenneth Simpson was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and seven related charges in January. On Thursday, Simpson was sentenced to death following a jury recommendation.

Simpson was sentenced to death for the charge of first-degree murder and to life in prison for the charge of first-degree assault. He was sentenced to an additional 74 years for the other seven charges.

In March 2023, two Hermann officers, Detective Sgt. Mason Griffith and Officer Adam Sullentrup had gone to a Casey's gas station after they were notified of a man with warrants out for his arrest. That man was Simpson.

As Griffith and Sullentrup tried to take Simpson into custody, he took out a gun and shot both officers, according to prosecutors. Griffith died from his injuries, and Sullentrup was seriously injured.

Simpson was taken into custody following a standoff.
