Pasadena Police Department officers seen on video in a  horseplay  incident that resulted in one inadvertently shooting another have been placed on administrative leave as a new investigation was opened in the unusual case, the agency said Monday.

In a statement, the city's police chief said new evidence emerged over the weekend in the investigation into the September shooting, which occurred as two officers were standing outside the cruiser in the department's parking garage.

Video from a dashcam in an approaching cruiser showed an officer  inappropriately and in a quick-draw fashion  draw his firearm from his holster and point it at the arriving cruiser. The weapon was re-holstered, but moments later the officer in the driver's seat of the arriving patrol vehicle drew his firearm and pointed it in the direction of the other officers.

The gun discharged, firing a round through the window that struck an officer outside the vehicle in the shoulder.

Video of the inadvertent shooting was released last week. In an update Monday, Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris said a witness provided more information after the video's release.

 Following the release of the OIS video last week, a witness came forward with additional information, and a new investigation has been opened based on documentation received Sunday,  Harris said.

Details about the new information were not immediately available.

Harris added that the officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave.

 Thorough investigations take time, and I won't rush one at the expense of the truth,  Harris said.  What I can promise is that I will be as transparent as California law allows and share information with this community as quickly as I'm able. 

In an earlier statement, Harris said  horseplay  and failures to follow safety rules and standards of professional conduct won't be tolerated.
