Motorists are being urged to use caution when driving in northwest Indiana Sunday morning as flood waters are impacting a major highway.

According to Indiana State Police, crews have been working to clear a stretch of Interstate 80-94 just across the state line for several hours, but high water remains on the roadway and is leading to hazardous driving conditions.

An Indiana State Police spokesman said multiple crashes have occurred in the area, and troopers are on scene to try to warn approaching motorists of the hazard:

I-80/94 is currently experiencing flooding westbound near Kennedy Ave (3 mm) @lINDOT was notified and sent a crew at 3:30, but the situation hasn't improved. According to InDOT's TrafficWise website, the flood waters are still across the roadway in both directions near mile marker 3, posing a hazard for motorists in the area.

Heavy rains occurred Sunday as a round of strong-to-severe thunderstorms rolled through the area, with several warnings issued across the Chicago area.

Fortunately rain is expected to subside Sunday morning, and most of the day should be dry and sunny.
