Federal agents are searching for suspects following a police-involved shooting during a gun trafficking operation that startled a normally quiet suburban Chicago street.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said two suspects remain at-large after a group of people allegedly tried to rob undercover agents in Country Club Hills.

The scene unfolded around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 189th and Loretto.

There,  during a firearms trafficking operation in Country Club Hills, an ATF Special Agent and a Task Force Officer discharged their firearms in response to an attempted armed robbery of undercover agents. 

The two people hit by the gunfire were taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment. They remained in stable condition Wednesday, authorities said. No other injuries were reported so far.

Three additional people were taken into custody at the scene, according to the ATF, and authorities are  actively looking for two additional offenders that fled the scene. 

Witnesses who live in the area reported seeing unmarked police cars and hearing at least three gunshots at the time of the shooting, noting the sounds were unusual given the street is typically quiet.

The FBI's Chicago Field Office confirmed to NBC Chicago that  at the request of the ATF, the FBI is assisting  with the investigation. The FBI said the investigation involved  an alleged assault on a federal officer. 

Illinois State Police, the FBI and Chicago police are also assisting in the  active and ongoing  investigation.

Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed it was responding to the scene, asking anyone who has information on the incident to call (312) 746-3609.
