New details were revealed in court Monday on what happened when a woman fatally stabbed a 7-year-old girl she didn't know while walking on a street on Chicago's South Side over the weekend. According to prosecutors, Eddimar Paola Hernández Chacón was walking just before noon Saturday down an East Chatham street with her teen sister, heading to pay a phone bill at Boost Mobile. The pair were holding hands as they exited the store and continued walking along South Cottage Grove Avenue near East 86th Street. Stream NBC 5 for free, 24/7, wherever you are. Employees at the business told NBC Chicago Gadyen began yelling profanities and threatened to kill them, but never showed a weapon. According to prosecutors, as Gayden walked passed the sisters, she grabbed a knife from the tote bag and lunged at the teen, who dodged the attack. That's when Gayden allegedly went for Eddimar and took her to the ground, stabbing her multiple times in the back. The attack was captured on surveillance video from a nearby Chicago Transit Authority station, prosecutors said. Video obtained by NBC Chicago showed witnesses rushing over to what is believed to be the area where the young girl was attacked. Several witnesses could also be seen chasing the suspect after the attack. Police said the bystanders detained Gayden, and she was later taken into custody after receiving treatment at a local hospital for injuries she sustained while being detained. Gayden did not appear in court Monday because she's hospitalized. She was ordered detained until her next court hearing on Oct. 7. At the courthouse Monday, her mother told NBC Chicago she had been trying to get her daughter help for years, but did not elaborate on what that entailed. She expressed her condolences to Eddimar's family. #nbcchicago #crimewatchchicago
