FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Atlanta Falcons officially signed running back Bijan Robinson to a historic contract extension Wednesday morning, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

According to ESPN, Robinson's new deal is worth up to $75 million, featuring a record $51 million guaranteed and $37 million at signing.

The extension is highly unusual for the position, getting finalized a full two years early in Robinson's rookie deal. Robinson expressed his gratitude to the front office and ownership, including general manager Ian Cunningham, head coach Kevin Stefanski and owner Arthur Blank.

 I think it's rare to do a deal - especially a running back deal two years early,  Robinson said.  For them to do that was definitely something I will never forget. Something that's a testament to my faith and to the faith they had in me. 

Robinson admitted that the waiting process during contract discussions was tough, saying he was itching to get back onto the practice field with his teammates. He emphasized that the early deal represents mutual respect.

 The respect they have for me and how I can help this program and then vice versa what I try to give to everybody here whether it's on the field, off the field. My whole job is to be here and win games,  Robinson said.

He also laughed about his phone blowing up after the news broke, noting that the coolest message he received was from actor Matthew McConaughey, a noted fan of Robinson's alma mater, the Texas Longhorns.

While Robinson's on-field talent is undeniable, teammates and coaches continue to highlight his personality and work ethic.

Falcons offensive lineman Jake Matthews praised the running back's humility despite his massive success.

 I don't think the guy's ever done anything wrong before. He's just an all-around good human being,  Matthews said.  I enjoy blocking for him. He shows up to work and there's no ounce of him that's entitled.
